Celebrating some of Fort McMurray’s Best & Brightest

Posted by: Kerri Johnson

Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo is home to some incredible young people, and recently we had the opportunity to formally recognize some of them.

On Saturday, Oct. 8th, we gathered at the Fort McMurray International Airport to announce the Top 20 under 20 Class of 2022.

The recipients of this year’s Top 20 have known since April that they had been selected by their peers. They had done so well at keeping the secret and finally could say it loud and proud.

Guests mingled with snacks before the formal program started with a blessing from Elder Robert Cree, followed by other dignitary speeches from Deputy Mayor Funky Banjoko, MLA Tany Yao & MP Laila Goodridge.

Each recipient had a brief explanation read as to why they were nominated and chosen to be a Top 20 under 20, they then were welcomed onto stage where they received their certificate.

When you read YMM Parent you will learn about Ruturaj, a 10-year-old who raised $2,500 for cancer survivors.

Or Laurel, who helped develop the Wood Buffalo Integrated Youth Network.

Or Declan, who is passionate about robotics. His team represented Canada at the National VEX Robotics tournament, making it to division finals with over 40 countries.

You will learn about teachers, friends and family members who support these young people and help them succeed.

Thank you to the Fort McMurray International Airport for once again being a partner and supporting the Top 20 Under 20 program, and to the MACOY students who worked so hard to finish this project.
